Raw, steam, sella and golden sella: what is the difference?

  • Raw (white) basmati: milled and polished without parboiling; the most aromatic form.
  • Steam basmati: paddy is lightly steamed before milling, which firms the grain and reduces breakage during cooking.
  • Sella (parboiled) basmati: paddy is soaked, steamed and dried before milling; the grains stay separate and are ideal for biryani and bulk catering.
  • Golden sella basmati: parboiled to a golden colour; very popular in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and other Gulf markets.

Frequently asked questions

Which basmati rice varieties does Prodigy Foods export?

We export 1121, 1718, 1509, Pusa and Traditional basmati, in raw, steam, sella and golden sella forms.

What is the difference between 1121 and 1509 basmati?

Both are extra-long-grain basmati. 1121 has slightly longer grains and the highest elongation after cooking, while 1509 is a shorter-duration variety with very similar grain length at a more competitive price.

What is golden sella basmati rice?

Golden sella is basmati paddy that is parboiled before milling, which gives the grain a golden colour and keeps it firm and separate after cooking. It is a favourite in the Gulf for biryani and kabsa.

What is the minimum order quantity?

Our minimum order is one 20 ft container, which holds about 20–25 MT depending on the packing.

Can you pack basmati rice under our own brand?

Yes. We pack in the buyer’s own brand and design in bag sizes from 1 kg to 50 kg.

Which ports do you ship from?

We ship from Mundra and Nhava Sheva (JNPT) on India’s west coast, on FOB or CIF terms.
